WebTest (Heriot Watt University)WebTest is a flexible automated-assessment tool, which has been used across a range of departments at Heriot-Watt and in other universities in support of flexible and distance learning. It can also be used in schools and a wide range of training situations for both formative and summative purposes. There is now a spinout company, formed through Heriot-Watt's commercialisation programme. Web4Test Ltd (www.web4test.com) is developing the core WebTest technology and is an application service provider in online assessment. WebTest uses the Internet to deliver tests to students, who can use any web browser. No further software is required by the student. WebTests are marked immediately and results are given. The tests are created by lecturers and are then used by students for self-assessment or for final examination. They can be restricted in time or place if required, or made available for student use from any computer, anywhere and at any time. WebTest supports a number of core question types including:
Features include random selection of questions from alternatives; use of random elements in questions, including numbers, text, images and diagrams; proper representation of mathematical and scientific formulae; multimedia elements such as graphs and diagrams can be included; data is recorded. Tools are available to provide useful information on student participation and performance to staff. This is typically done automatically via email. System requirementsTechnical integration of Web4Test is simple. It requires no installation within the client organisation. Users access the Web4Test services including the host server over the Internet. Web4Test report modules can be utilised as a stand-alone unit or be fully integrated into the organisation's current human resources and training programmes. |
