Examine

http://ibis.nott.ac.uk/software/examine.html

Examine is a multiple-choice authoring and delivery system for use either as an adjunct to courseware or as a standalone means of on-line formative self-assessment. A number of question types are supported, as well as graphics and multimedia. There is also support for the Microcosm hypermedia system developed by Southampton University. Recently Examine has been licensed to McGraw Hill for distribution with a large collection of economics questions under the name of Begg Examine (this will form part of a teaching pack that supports the book Economics by David Begg et al).

UCoSDA is distributing the MS Windows version of Examine. There is also a Macintosh version which is currently beta testing. The beta version is informally available. The development of Examine has been funded by the (Information Training Technology Initiative) ITTI that has now ended, and the PC version is thus currently available to UK higher education at distribution cost (i.e. £25). It is also available to schools for 30 pounds (sterling), and anyone else for £35

System requirements

The PC version of Examine is freely available.

The Macintosh version of Examine is currently publicly beta testing. This version is freely available by FTP to UK Higher Education, although users should be aware that it is still a beta with some minor problems. The delivery engine (i.e. the main Examine program is thought to be reliable, but there are still some problems with the authoring system (Quizmaker).

Examine is no longer being developed, and it is unlikely that the Macintosh version will ever proceed beyond this 68K beta version. However, the delivery engine in this version is stable and quite useable.
