Clyde Virtual University Assessment Engine

http://cvu.strath.ac.uk/ae

The Clyde Virtual University Assessment Engine has been used for the delivery of online assessments and evaluation forms at Scottish Universities since 1995. Students have been taking self-assessment tests, filling out evaluation forms and completing formal examinations using the system. This system is mainly for formative purpose. Version 2.0 builds on two years of experience in a real university environment.

The model for the assessment engine is now divided into three parts:

  • The authoring system allows registered authors to design tests and evaluations over the web, using fill-out forms. There is also a test wizard that can be used to create simple tests with ease.
  • The assessment system firstly displays the tests to the user, and then takes the results and corrects them. Feedback can be given immediately, and also sent to the user or tutors via email.
  • Every invocation of the assessment system is carefully logged so that the log monitor can compile tables of results, and even recreates each separate submission exactly.

The assessment engine supports a number of core question types including:

  • Multiple choice
  • Multiple response
  • Free text entry
  • List ordering

At the moment, the assessment engine is free for use in academic departments of higher education in Scotland.
