Can students be given feedback?

Yes, one of the strengths of CAA is that students can receive swift feedback which may offer some or all of the following:

  • scores (of individual questions and or the entire assessment)
  • notification of the correctness of a response
  • written guidance, praise and study suggestions based on a student's response.

Most CAA packages allow tutors to enter their own feedback, so that, following an attempt at a question, a message appears explaining why the response is wrong and perhaps directing students to relevant reading or course materials. Additionally, some packages allow for the inclusion of hints to be made available during tests to help a student toward the correct answer. (Marks can be adjusted accordingly.) In some cases, students take a summative assessment and receive no feedback at the initial stages. They then have the option at a later stage to go through the exam and receive feedback at the end of each question.

The provision of feedback (particularly on wrong responses) is especially useful when using CAA for formative and self-assessments.
