What subjects are suitable for CAA?

The 1999 CAA Centre survey into the use of CAA has compiled statistics on the number of CAA tests found in different subject areas. The results show that nearly every academic discipline registered some CAA activity.

Those subject areas with the highest numbers of CAA tests were computing/IT, biomedical science, geological science, mathematics, engineering, other sciences (chemistry, physics), modern languages, business and accountancy.

These results are consistent with the findings of the 1995 national study of CAA conducted by Derek Stephens and Janine Mascia of Loughborough University. Although there is a bias towards science and technology subjects, there are increasing examples of the use of CAA in other disciplines. These include the following recent CAA work in humanities:

  • Poetica is a project which delivers CAA to students taking a first year poetry module at the University of Sunderland.
  • "Web + Qmark + Humanities" by Chris Hopkins is a case study published in Computers and Texts 16 which details the introduction of CAA into a first year module called "Modernity and Modernisation" offered by the Cultural Studies department at Sheffield Hallam University.
