Choosing an Optical Mark Reader

When choosing an OMR system, you may wish to consider the following areas:

Hardware Issues

  • Amount of traffic the OMR will be required to handle
  • Speed of auto-feed versus hand-feed machines. Auto-feed machines process forms at approx. 2 per second.
  • Self-diagnosis facility for identifying faults
  • Double-sided or single-sided reader

Software Issues

  • Data export features
  • Ease of form design
  • Ease of form reproduction
  • Range of question types supported
  • Statistical analysis packages (with which the system is provided or compatible)

Maintenance Contract

  • Annual maintenance
  • Service provision in case of breakdown
