What is computer-based assessment (CBA)?

A computer-based assessment is one in which the questions or tasks are delivered to a student via a computer terminal.

In most cases, the student's answers are typed in at the computer keyboard and recorded and marked electronically. Computer-based assessments can be delivered in the following ways:

  • Using stand alone machines

  • Using a local area network of machines

  • Using an intranet or internet
